New Valve Integrates Back-Flow Preventer to Meet EN 1717 Regulations
IMT Armaturen has announced a new extraction valve that reflects stricter European norms for preventing back-flow of non-potable water into drinking water lines. The new norm, EN 1717, specifies the conditions for using various kinds of safety valves as a function of the risk category. IMT’s new extraction valve is the first in the world to integrate a Type BA backflow preventer with a conventional extraction design.
The new valve’s Type BA back-flow preventer is certified for Category 4 applications – the highest risk category for which hydraulically powered valves are certified.
By incorporating the backflow preventer in the extraction valve itself, IMT has also made an important contribution to the safety of drinking water supplies. Until now, back-flow preventers required a large installation space and cost considerably more than the valve or underlying system whose integrity they were designed to protect. The combination of the need for a large installation space and the high cost led in many cases to the operation of equipment without the required back-flow preventer.

IMT’s new valve and integrated back-flow preventer changes this. Designed in close cooperation with Ingenieurbüro VOLLMER, an engineering consultant and design firm, the integrated valve – back-flow preventer provides the highest level of back-flow safety at a completely acceptable price. The back-flow preventer itself implemented as a cartridge that can be dropped into a variety of IMT valves. In its standard implementation, the new valve is available as a garden valve or fill valve for heating systems.
According to IMT, the new valve – back-flow preventer combination is well suited for protecting several types of endangered extraction points. Around the house, this includes heating system fill points, home sprinkling systems or power washers. In agriculture, the valve is perfect for any application involving hoses or the filling of sprayers. In the public sector, the regulations can be met with the new valve in laboratories, schools and hospitals, as well as water mains at construction sites. Variants of the new valve, which comes in brass or stainless steel, are also available for extraction points in the food and chemical industries.
The company behind the new valve, Swiss-based IMT ARMATUREN, has enjoyed a more than 30-year love affair with valves of every imaginable kind. Founded in 1972, the company has leveraged its three decades of expertise to gain an exceptionally clear understanding of the needs of the specifier, buyer and end user of industrial, commercial and plumbing valves.
